Genome Analysis by Dr. Doug McDonald

88% Irish/Orkney, 2% African, the rest somewhere in the Mideast.  The Mideast may represent a recent mix or simply that you are from nearer the Mideast than is Ireland. Given that the chromosomes do not have lots of Mideast, it likely is a single spot. That spot is in SE England. The African is real.

Research Challenge - Find the Jackson/Reeves Connection:

While my surname is Reeves I match Y-DNA (male only) with Jacksons.  My grandfather Charles Reeves claimed to be born March 8,1890 in Jackson County, TN on his military papers.  He was supposedly not raised by his biological parents.  I do not know if he was raised by a Reeves family or not, or how he got the name.  As I don't know the identity of my paternal great grandparents I have been at a roadblock in my research for many years.  In an effort to solve the mystery of my true great grandfather I have purchased several DNA tests both for myself and for others.  Ironically, I do match DNA with several Reeves as well, but not with Y (male only) DNA so possibly that was the name of my great grandmother.

The following compares the family tree of some people that I match with that have Jackson ancestors.  Any ancestor born after 1900 is not displayed and the name of the person that supplied the sample is not displayed as well:

There appears to be common Jackson ancestors amongst these people which means I most likely share the same common ancestors.  As I know my male ancestors at 2 and 3 generations and Elias is highly suspected to be related at 7 generations, the challenge is to determine who makes up generations 4, 5 an 6. Generation 6 is highly suspected to be Eli Jackson 1804-1865.

Charles Reeves Info

In my notes from 1990's taken during a discussion with my Aunt she says the family of Charles had 2 daughters and 3 farms. The Son-In-Law was mean and killed his dog. He hit the guy and ran away. Around age 15 he got a job as a water boy with the railroad on the section group. Aunt Pearl thought that Charles’ mother may have been named Mary. In a more recent conversation with a different Aunt she indicated that Charles Reeves was a single child that was adopted and nobody knew if Reeves was his real name. She believes his adoptive family lived in the Roanoke or Richmond, Virginia area.

Here is everything I’ve been able to confirm about Charles Reeves:

Listed his birth as March 8, 1890 Jackson County, TN as documented on WW1 enlistment papers and on VA Hospital papers.

Enlists in Army 1911, age 21 at Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Lists occupation as miner. Is discharged June 25, 1911 for disabilities:

Age 28 - Marries Mae Parker April 9, 1918 in Hawkins County , TN – Bestman was R.B. Thayer

Age 26 - Enlists in Army January 26, 1916 in Big Stone Gap, VA, lists occupation as Miner

Age 29 - Honorable discharge from Army May 26, 1919. Lists address as Big Stone Gap, VA

Age 40 - 1930 census lists address as Jonesboro , VA with family. Lists mother as Alfa Catron.  This doesn't not appear to be accurate as there is a different dwelling and family number for Alfa.  DNA testing of a great grandson of her husband Ellis Patton Catron did not prove positive to be the father of Charles Reeves but did show a relationship on my maternal side.

Age 41 – For 20 days in 1931 he was in the US Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Johnson City , TN. He was treated for dental disease, defective vision and lower back pain. It says he was 68”, brown eyes and hair, he could read and write, was Protestant and married

Age 45 - March 9, 1935 receives letter from Veterans Administration listing address as R.F.D. 3, Jonesville, Virginia

Age 45 – September 2, 1935 killed in Upper Matacumbe, Florida by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 while working for WPA building the railroad to Key West , Florida . Death certificate lists his father as “Jim Reeves”.  Veterans Administration claim # XC-1577653.

There are no records for Charles Reeves between birth and age 21.

This following identifies Charles Reeves as the father of Helen Reeves in the Lee County, VA marriage book with a date of March 19, 1938

This following identifies Myrtle "Reeves" marrying C. R. Jackson (Charley Ray) in the Lee County, VA marriage book with a date of March 29, 1940

Update:

This is what we know about Charles Reeves.  There are no records of him before 1911 when joined the Army.  He listed his birthday as March 8, 1890 born in Jackson County, TN.

Pearl Reeves-Warden daughter of Charles Reeves told me that he wasn’t raised by his parents.  The people that raised him had 2 daughters and 3 farms.  There was an incident and he fled TN.

This is what we know about Charles R Hamilton.  Note the middle initial R.  This could have been for Reeves.  He shows up the 1900 Jackson County, TN census as the son of Joseph and Sarah Hamilton as their 10 year old son, farm worker and with a birthdate of March 1890.  The mother lists having 2 natural born children.  A previous census shows she had 2 daughters.  They were grown and moved out of the house by 1900.  There are no other records for Charles R Hamilton, who clearly was not the biological son of Sarah Hamilton.  Charles R Hamilton fits with the story of Charles Reeves having been raised by people that had 2 grown daughters.

Here is what we know about Charley Hamilton, no middle initial.  Charley married Myrtle Netherton in 1906.  They had 2 children, a son and a daughter.  In the 1910 census Myrtle is living with her parents with the two children.  The census indicates she is married, but no husband is listed.  In 1920 she lists herself as a widow.  Betty Hamilton, the granddaughter of Charley Hamilton, via his son Lawrence, tells me her grandfather was born a Jackson and adopted by Hamiltons.  She also indicates he abandoned her grandmother.  A DNA test conclusively confirms that Betty is my half 1st cousin which means we share a grandparent.

While we can’t confirm that Charles R Hamilton and Charley Hamilton are the same person we do know via DNA that Charley Hamilton is indeed Charles Reeves!

I suspect that Charles Reeves had some sort of document that listed him as Charles Reeves Hamilton and that he erased the Hamilton to join the Army and started using the name Charles Reeves.  I will continue to search for any document that can provide Charles R Hamilton and Charley Hamilton were the same person.

Charles Reeves’ biological father was indeed a Jackson.  This has been confirmed via a male only DNA test that I took and fits with the story Betty Hamilton shared about her grandfather Charley Hamilton.  Betty shared the following picture of Charley Hamilton.
